The folks over at SEOmoz recently announced the launch of their new backlink checking tool dubbed Linkscape. I have to say that Linkscape is a very unique tool and I really don't know of anything else that is like it. The way the Linkscape tool works is very simple, just type in a web address and the tool takes care of the rest.
The goal of the Linkscape tool is to help webmasters improve their SEO by providing a very in-depth analysis of the sites that are linking to it. SEOmoz actually has its own index of over 30 billion pages (updated every 25 days) that is used to perform the analysis. The tool can be used on your own website or to analyze your competitor's link profile. Linkscape uses several measures and metrics to perform its analysis including:
- Number of other websites linking to the page
- MozRank - a 10-point measure of global querry-independent link authority or popularity
- Domain-level mozRank
- Domain Juice - the sm of mozRanks for all URLs in a domain
- MozTrust - a calculated level of the site's authority and trust level
When you run a Linkscape report on a site, you can find out all kinds of really great information. One really nice feature is that you can see all the 301 and 302 redirects that are pointing to your site, links from the same IP blocks, links with the NoIndex meta tag, links from images, and links from noscript. You will have all the information you need to analyze the links to your site.
SEOmoz is actually offering a basic report that you can run for free that includes a domain and URL backlink data overview based on the Linkscape metrics. In order to get the full advanced report, youumust be a SEOmoz Pro member. The advanced report includes information including
- 5 most powerful pages linking to your site
- 5 most common anchor texts
- A list of backlinks in order of importance (based on mozRank and mozTrust)
- Which pages are providing the most "link juice" to your site
If you are a SEOmoz Pro member ($79/month), you get 20 credits per month worth 1 advanced linkscape report each. Of course, the Pro membership offers plenty of other great information and features as well, but the membership is not cheap. If SEO is extremely important to the success of your website or if you need to get some backgound on your competitors, it is an excellent tool for the money. Not everyone will be able to afford it, but those than can will really enjoy the information that Linkscape provides.
